What is Sciatica?

The term sciatica describes the symptoms of leg pain and possibly tingling, numbness or weakness that originates in the lower back and travels through the buttock and down the large sciatic nerve in the back of the leg. Sciatica is not a medical diagnosis in and of itself – it is a symptom of an underlying medical condition like a herniated disc.

What is a spinal tumor?

A spinal tumor is a cancerous or noncancerous growth that develops within your spinal canal (spinal cord tumors) or within the bones of your spine (vertebral tumors).

There are two main types of spinal cord tumors intramedullary tumors and extramedullary tumors.

Herniated Disc Surgery

Cervical discectomy procedures are performed to relieve the pressure on nerves from a herniated disc. A disc herniates when the outer portion of the disc ruptures and some of the softer disc nucleus material squeezes out. The herniated disc pushes against the spinal cord or spinal nerves and causes pain in the neck or arms.
