2020 has been a weird year, especially for travel. With COVID-19, many Americans have found their daily lives significantly impacted. After being cooped up at home, many are opting to take road trips this summer since air travel is riskier. According to the Expedia 2020 Summer Travel Report, about 85% of Americans plan to take a road trip this summer.

In addition to preparing for your road trip according to CDC guidance for COVID-19, we recommend you also prepare to keep your spine happy and healthy. Spending hours sitting in the car can wreak havoc on your spine health. Use the following tips to help prevent back pain from ruining your trip.

Bring Your Own Support

Even the comfiest car seat can cause back pain on a road trip. Car seats just aren’t always designed ergonomically. If your car lacks lumbar support, place a rolled blanket or lumbar pillow between your back and the seat to support the natural inward curve of your lower back. And don’t forget to pack a neck pillow for any naps you may take on the drive.

Get Moving at Rest Stops

Your spine is happiest when in movement. Regular movement throughout the day helps to promote the exchange of nutrients in your spine, helping you to remain pain-free. While regular movement isn’t really possible in a moving vehicle, we highly recommend stopping to move around every two hours. When you stop, make sure to walk around for at least 5-10 minutes.

Bring an Ice Pack and Pain Medication

It’s always a good idea to have an ice pack and some over-the-counter pain medication on hand when traveling. Ice packs are great at relieving back pain; they help reduce pain-inducing inflammation, meaning you’ll feel better much sooner.
