Several recent studies have found meditation for back pain relief an effective treatment. One of the most noticeable differences between meditating for back pain relief and other treatment options is that with meditation, you aren’t having something done to you like a surgery. Instead, you’re doing something for yourself.
Study Results
- Participants’ perception of pain significantly decreased after just three 20-minute sessions.
- Many participants experienced a decrease in their perception of pain well after meditation sessions. Which means meditation isn’t only effective during or immediately following a session.
- Meditation proved to be more effective than other relaxation techniques or distraction.
How To Meditate
Many of our patients find meditation to be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. There is no right or wrong way to meditate – it all depends on what feels right to you. That being said, many find the following instructions helpful when they are just beginning to meditate. Through meditation, participants’ perception of pain significantly decreased after just three 20-minute sessions. To begin, locate a quiet, dark room. Find a place to sit or lie down comfortably, preferably while practicing proper posture. Close your eyes and breathe naturally. Don’t try to control your breathing. Instead, focus your attention on your breath and the movements of your body as you inhale. If your mind wanders, try to focus it on your breathing again.
Start with 5-10 minutes of meditation and slowly increase it. Many find it helpful to set aside time to meditate in the morning or during their lunch break. The key is to find the time and place that works best for you and start right away.
Aside from using meditation for back pain relief, it has many other benefits, including:
- Lower blood pressure
- Lower heart rate
- Slower respiratory rate
- Less anxiety
- Stress relief
It is important to note that meditation may not be an effective means of pain relief for everyone suffering from back pain. While it may not be a cure-all for your back pain, it will definitely benefit your body in other ways.
